Allanburg is a tiny community located along the Welland Canal within the city of Thorold. The Allanburg bridge or Bridge 11 was the location of a sod turning ceremony for the first Welland Canal in 1824. The bridge is a vertical lift bridge, built in 1932 and still in operation.
Another notable event in Allanburg's history is the Windoc incident. On August 11, 2001, the bulk carrier was struck by the descending Allanburg lift bridge.
Although there were no fatalities the ship was damaged beyond repair. A cairn, located next to the Allanburg Bridge on the west side commemorates the building of The Old Welland Canal.
